Honoring the Past (2022)

"Honoring the Past", interweaves narratives of histories of the people, and country of Korea. The concept of "Han" is untranscribable into English, and is referred to embody the deep feelings of anguish, sorrow, resentment and pain from which Korea's history has set forth its people to consume and reflect upon.

A unique channel for describing one’s feelings, considered an essential part of the Korean identity, the concept of Han or Haan (한) embodies generational trauma. It tethers one to the history of the people & country of Korea, including such hardships as the Japanese Occupation, Korean War, & slavery. Through this quilt made from fabric cyanotype prints (or sun prints), that are layered with transparency film of photographs taken by my grandfather during the Korean War, you get a glimpse into the lives of civilians going about their day, amidst the global struggles they faced.
