Julianna Souther
Multimedia Artist

Ever since I discovered that my identity holds more than one reality, my work has embodied documenting narratives pertaining to being Asian and adopted. The void adoptees experience is one thrust upon us at birth where adoption trauma has proven to be linked to the adoptee lineage. Generational trauma defined as: a loss to our culture and motherland. Living in a predominately white world, our unacknowledged minority group often blends so effortlessly that we are torn between the expectations and receiving acceptance from being heard. Thus, our need to reestablish bonds and community, and become reacquainted with ourselves again, is the reason my artist voice has developed into my therapy for understanding the psychological confliction with my adoptee identity, and a way to advocate for ourselves. Through a holistic approach, my art connects family, socio-political schemes, and individuality into an environment that only a handful know about. Research and discussions have formed a way to broadcast awareness against the misleading systems and its myths to a wider audience.

This multilayered conversation allows me to experiment with a multiplicity of mediums such as, photography, video and book arts. They activate truths rarely seen outside a political system, which provides a space for testimonials from the Asian American and adoptee perspective.

My current body of work follows the injustices witnessed within my adoptive community, and beyond. I have recently seen racism becoming more problematic in the wake of the discriminatory acts against Asian-Americans at the start of the current Covid-19 pandemic. To counter and dismantle the ongoing discrimination, I willingly place myself at the center of this conversation. By integrating important issues reflected in my autobiographical projects, I aim to promote our stories for clarity and change, and to inspire useful conversation starters inside unfamiliar dialogues.
